2040: Baseline, Boom or Bust
As we enter an era of rapid transformation and unprecedented challenges, it is essential for travel managers, meeting & event planners, and corporate decision-makers to look ahead and frame our current strategic thinking with a clear vision of the future. Business travel and meetings and events (M&E) are poised for significant change over the next decade and a half, driven by a complex interplay of sustainability goals, technological advancements, evolving work models, and geopolitical dynamics.
In this paper to mark the 10th anniversary of our Global Business Travel Forecast, we explore, for the first time, a long-term vision of the future and potential trajectories through three distinct scenarios, each offering insights into how these forces should affect policy-making, budgeting and priorities. By examining these scenarios, we can better understand the diverse possibilities that lie ahead and the strategic imperatives required to thrive in each potential future.
Based on trajectory data analysis and interviews with industry leaders, behaviorists and climate tech founders, this forward-looking approach enables us to anticipate changes, strengthen our strategies, and make informed decisions that align long-term objectives. It is through this lens of foresight and adaptability that we can build resilience, seize opportunities, and navigate the complexities of the future.
We invite you to reflect on the insights presented, and consider how your organization can prepare for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Together we can ensure that travel and meetings remain catalysts for growth, scalability and sustainable practices.

CWT GBTA Global business travel forecast 2025
When it comes to pricing, global business travel has finally reached an enduring, higher baseline. Prices will continue to rise in 2025, but only moderately, so expect a period of normalized growth.
However, this pricing environment, one of marginal gains and price regularity, is fragile. Global leisure travel has now realized a lot of its pent-up demand, while corporate travel has been resurgent, with 2024 edging at preCovid levels.
There are many factors at play, whether its volatile oil prices, labor costs and constraints, inflationary pressures, and geopolitical factors. As this elevated baseline edges upwards, albeit marginally, travel budgets will come under increased scrutiny, especially as travel patterns and attitudes change.
It’s why business travel can’t be viewed in a silo, and the true value to an organization must be fully realized. This forecast can help with those calculations.

Environmental consciousness: How travelers can make a difference
Organizations are making great progress with greener travel programs and policies, recognizing the urgency of addressing environmental concerns. Sustainability has become a top priority for businesses worldwide, and business travelers play a crucial role in this transformation. The sustainable tourism market is poised to grow by $335.93 billion during 2023-2027. Here are ways that business travelers can contribute to making their trips more sustainable.
Eco-conscious offsetting
The concept of carbon offsetting is no longer limited to simply purchasing carbon credits. We’re witnessing a proliferation of creative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of travel. One notable example is Treedom an organization dedicated to reforestation and community support. Here’s how you can get involved:
- Plant trees remotely: Treedom allows you to remotely plant trees, enabling you to choose the species and environment where your tree will grow. With 4 million trees planted globally, the impact is tangible.
- Stay connected: When you participate in tree planting through Treedom, you receive photographs, geolocation information, and updates on the local project’s progress and its impact. This innovative approach not only helps offset your carbon emissions but also contributes to biodiversity and supports local communities.
Embrace eco-friendly hospitality
Greener accommodation options: The choice of accommodation plays a significant role in determining the sustainability of business trips. Partnerships like the one CWT has with Thrust Carbon empowers travelers to make eco-conscious choices at the point of sale. Here’s how to make a difference:
- Embrace ‘less is more’: Opt for a smaller hotel room to conserve energy and resources. Additionally, select accommodations close to meeting locations to reduce the need for lengthy taxi journeys, further minimizing carbon footprint.
- Choose alternative transportation: Many hotels have eco-friendly transportation options, such as electric vehicle charging stations, bike rentals, and shuttle services using low-emission vehicles.
- Energy efficiency: Choose hotels investing in energy-efficient lighting, heating, and cooling systems. Smart technology, like motion sensors, is used to minimize energy consumption in rooms and meeting areas.
- Check sustainability credentials: Research the sustainability credentials of potential hotels. Look for properties with clear targets and tangible goals, such as commitments to install solar panels at 50% of their locations by 2025. Explore and understand sustainability standards in hotels by listening to a green standard in hospitality.
Nurturing circularity
Engaging with the circular economy: Travelers are encouraged to consider the principles of the circular economy at every stage of their journey. Here’s how to adopt a circular approach:
- Choose sustainable fashion: Rather than opting for fast fashion, support local sustainable fashion labels when buying work outfits. This choice promotes eco-friendly and ethical practices within the fashion industry.
- Sustainable food choices: Ensure that meals are sourced sustainably, meaning they come from ecosystems managed according to environmental standards that promote regeneration. Look for food items labeled with a carbon-neutral certification scheme and opt for dishes made from ingredients from local farms, contributing to the local community.
- Zero-waste travel: Zero-waste lifestyles on the road means making an effort to produce as little waste as possible by using reusable products and choosing businesses that prioritize waste reduction.
- Plastic-free travel: The reduction of single-use plastics is a significant concern for eco-conscious travelers. Promoting eco-friendly travel involves the use of reusable water bottles, utensils, and shopping bags to reduce plastic waste during your journey.
- Eco-friendly transportation: Electric scooters, bicycles, and hybrid or electric rental cars are becoming more prevalent in many destinations. These options reduce air pollution and reliance on fossil fuels.
Business travelers have the power to make a significant impact on the sustainability of their trips. Creatively offsetting emissions, choosing eco-friendly accommodation, and embracing circularity help shape a greener, more environmentally responsible future for business travel. Our choices matter, and together, we can make a positive difference for our planet.

Celebrating the 37th anniversary of the Air Traveler’s Bill of Rights for individuals with disabilities
For those of us who travel frequently for business, it’s easy to forget the complexities of travel for those with disabilities. As we mark the 37th anniversary of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Bill of Rights for air travelers with disabilities, it’s an apt moment to reflect on the rights and conveniences these regulations afford and how they’ve enhanced the travel experiences for many.
This Bill of Rights was constructed under the Air Carrier Access Act, outlining the essential rights of air travelers with disabilities. Today, as a leading travel management company, we want to ensure that business travel managers and travelers are well-informed about this significant document.
What is the Bill of Rights?
Designed to ensure that air travelers with disabilities are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve, the Bill of Rights’ key provisions include rights to accessible information, facilities, and airport and onboard assistance. Travelers can also bring assistive devices or service animals, request seating accommodations, access specific aircraft features, and seek resolution for any disability-related issues.
The Bill of Rights is a living document reflecting the ever-evolving landscape of air travel. USDOT ensures that the Bill of Rights remains updated as regulations change. The latest version was published in July 2022.
Who does the Bill of Rights Serve?
This Bill serves individuals with disabilities, referring to persons with a physical or mental impairment that impacts major life activities, whether walking, hearing, or breathing. Whether you’re flying with a U.S. airline or a foreign airline to or from the U.S., the Bill of Rights applies, ensuring an inclusive air travel experience.
The Bill of Rights ensures that discrimination based on disability has no place in air travel. It mandates airline personnel, from frontline staff to airline contractors, to be well-trained and sensitive to the needs of passengers with disabilities.
As we mark this anniversary, let’s take a moment to appreciate these essential rights and always ensure that every journey is undertaken with respect and understanding for all.

#IMEX Las Vegas 2023 reflections
…and just like that, IMEX America 2023 has concluded as fast as it started.
A week ago, #EventProfs from all over the world were #IMEXcited to meet in Las Vegas to get business done.
A week of creating captivating memories, attending fascinating educational sessions, and gaining indispensable connections.
A week to come together with our professional meetings and events community; our ever-growing global network.
A week later, #IMEXhausted has became a longing to hit replay yet knowing we won’t hear that sweet melody until #IMEX24.I’m full of gratitude as I reflect on my #IMEX23 highlights. Every #EventProfs had their own IMEX experience and mine was no exception. Here’s what caught my attention after ten years of attending this conference (written in a ‘Top 5’ list like my pre-IMEX blog because this Meeting Planner needs to get back to planning)!
- I couldn’t turn any corner without being entangled in the conversation around AI and its impact on our industry. It could be a daunting task of ‘keeping up’ with this topic but keep on keeping on! Change is constantly upon us in this tech space and it’s not going away so embrace it as best you can. My advice? Engage with topic experts (like Nick Borelli, Miguel Neves, Julius Solaris), continue to be a part of the conversation, and get hands on with experiencing the technology. In order to advance in this profession, we’ll have to adapt and (2020 throwback word) ‘pivot’ – the good news? We’re in this together.
- Watching our global community come together to help raise each other up is absolutely one of my highlights. I noticed some small but impactful moments that make a conference center full of thousands of professionals feel like one unified team. Shining examples like holding a moment of silence before the Smart Monday keynote, being #MauiStrong during educational sessions (the Hawaii booth was full of aloha all Tradeshow long by the way), and supporting charity organizations such as SEARCH Foundation, SITE Foundation, and MPI Foundation all week long and beyond. Moments like those make me so proud to be a part of this industry (because like Technology advancements… we’re in this together.)
- Talking about keeping up… Vibe check, Gen Z! Hosting the Future Leaders Forum was not only my #IMEX23 highlight but honestly, my top career highlight. I spent a whole day moderating educational content for 100+ young professionals and all I can say is I hope you pull a chair over for this next generation of #EventProfs because they are ready to be at the table (no admission cap.) They’re not afraid of vulnerably asking the tough questions, caring for the environment and themselves (yes, sustainability and mental health is up on the list), and just like us, they’re craving for authentic connections. And TBH, I’m just happy they thought I was cool and not cringe.
- Keeping my finger on the pulse of the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) trends was incredibly engaging. It was tough to pick favorites during this year’s trade show because it’s constantly being elevated. I had the opportunity to engage in more genuine ‘local’ experiences at the booth vs being gifted a boring old branded pen (and I saw more fun being had as I walked by). Experiences like customized cookies and a photo opportunity on a roller coaster were memorable activations. It’s this type of engagement that will ignite business being done in the future.
- And to leave you on my last and most important highlight: the theme of in-person connection is here to stay! Since I first attended IMEX America in 2012, I’ve noticed that my highlight each year is delightfully the same. And what is that highlight you may ask? Its a firm handshake, a friendly hug, and a shared laugh when you meet face to face. An instant dose of belonging. This synergy flowing and bouncing off one another creates changed behavior. It’s why there’s so many highlights and not many lowlights and is why IMEX America holds such a special place in my #EventProfs heart. #IMEXcited even more for #IMEX24!

Lean, Green, Money Saving Machine: How to integrate travel and meetings
I like to use the term ‘treetings’ to describe the combined spend category of travel and meetings. Companies should “treet” themselves to bigger and better benefits by leveraging the power of a fully aligned travel and meetings strategy.
All cuteness aside, leveraging the totality of all spend within a comprehensive approach can lead to so many benefits in a time of steadily rising travel and event costs.
The CWT GBTA Global Business Travel Forecast 2024 predicts a global average cost-per-event attendee per day of $169, up 5.6% from 2022, which is expected to rise a further 3% to $174 in 2024.
With higher costs comes greater responsibility leading companies to embrace a combined approach to managing business travel and meetings & events.
A centralized strategy boosts savings, provides visibility and control and helps meet sustainability and ESG objectives.
Immediate benefits include greater leverage and negotiation power, incremental savings and cost avoidance, positive impact to ESG goals, lean approaches (i.e. productivity gains, reduction in duplication, time savings), six sigma efficiencies (i.e. process improvements, user satisfaction), and strengthened supplier relationships.
The ultimate goal is to bring the separate pieces together into one cohesive, aligned, and overarching strategy covering all travel-related spend categories. Having the collective data and insights in one place supports the formation of annual strategies. It is important to ensure that all levers and triggers in one area are communicated across all areas so the impact can be fully assessed. Were transient rates reduced mid-year? What is the impact on meetings? This can improve the user experience, and strengthen your position with suppliers, and executive leadership teams.
Your playbook for a combined strategy
There is no better time than the present to concentrate on a focused game plan. Travel costs are on the rise and companies have so many competing priorities. It is so important to avoid making decisions in a vacuum or silo. Companies should not only consider the impact that a sudden change, new strategy, or fresh idea can have on their travel program; thought also needs to be given to the resulting cause and effect on the meetings program. Take the time to think through key strategies at an overarching level to ensure alignment across all travel and meeting categories. Be purposeful about considering downstream impacts before deploying new solutions and strategies.
Elevate your supplier strategy
Many companies are heading down this path, focusing more on how to leverage the totality of their supplier spending. They realize that regardless of the purpose, be that transient travel or meeting, it is the same company dollar going out the door in exchange for a product or service. Bringing visibility into the total dollars spent with a particular hotel or venue can be the start of developing targeted discussions around data-led goals.
Let’s take a look at a basic real-life example. A company’s hotel transient RFP is about to launch. There is a bidder’s conference scheduled with the supplier base. Consider the power of presenting top market data that overlaps with the meetings & events program and informing suppliers of key harmonious strategies.
It is time to expand the definition of a centralized strategy to be all-encompassing over all travel and meeting spend categories. Yes, companies can have a successful centralized travel strategy, and also a separate thriving centralized meetings strategy, but consider the power of a unified single approach. Just as chocolate and peanut butter are delicious treats on their own, pair them together in a Reese’s peanut butter cup, and they are simply better together. Similarly, a single strategy guiding both travel and meeting programs can unearth new insights and ‘a-ha’ moments. Companies can move into an entire new realm – to fully optimize the potential that exists.
Think about those strategic thinkers who reside within the organization and consider aligning under one unified travel and meetings strategist. Seeing the big picture through a focused lens can uncover key insights that were there all along – they just needed to be discovered.
Here are 3 steps to get started on your strategic journey:
- Draft a combined strategy – it can be refined over time.
- Organize frequent meetings with key leaders of travel, meetings, air, hotel, OBT, and group travel to strategize annually and at frequent intervals throughout the year. Share your vision with your travel partner(s) as they can help execute and deliver insightful recommendations and best practices.
- Develop an advisory board to enlist feedback from all areas to continually drive positive change. A focus on stakeholder engagement will allow companies to leverage the insights gained from employees to further perfect the process, user experience, and overall value. For example, is at-home virtual work leading to more frequent meet-ups among local employees? Where are these small meetings taking place? Is there a need to negotiate small meeting packages in transient markets?
Take a little time to lay out your cohesive strategy for travel and meetings, and the incremental “treets” or benefits will be unlocked as you execute upon the plan.

5 pieces of honest advice to really prepare for IMEX America 2023
Written by a CWT meeting planner who’s been #IMEXhausted for 10 years
Ahhhh… IMEX America, the Olympics of all the meeting and event conferences (IMO). Where thousands of #EventProfs from all over the world come together to get business done in the 24/7 city of Las Vegas.
Walking the IMEX America Tradeshow Floor for the first time as a recent graduating student in 2012 was my ‘AH HA’ moment. This conference holds a special place in my heart because of the catalyst of confirming I indeed want a career in this corporate events world.
And after a decade of attending IMEX America as a Young Professional, Supplier Partner, Guest Speaker, Hosted Buyer, and even an IMEX Brand Ambassador, here are my 5 pieces of honest advice to really prepare for IMEX America 2023.
- What I learned…
Take care of your future self by doing the extensive research and getting organized prior to your flight. You won’t feel like a small fish in a big pond if you’re able to understand the bigger picture of the conference. Review the schedule of events ahead of time and block off your calendar so you can easily refer to it (‘it’ being the IMEX app, download it and thank me later.)
Learner for life? Smart Monday powered by MPI is a whole day of complimentary education and professional development prior to Tuesday’s official start day. - Layers of comfort
a. Yes, bring layers of clothes because it’s hot in Las Vegas but chilly in the conference center.
b. Yes, bring business attire and comfortable walking shoes that reflects your personality (easy conversation starter.)
c. Yes, bring a reusable bag dedicated to putting all your new branded tchotchkes that you’ll be gifted.
d. Yes, bring that sustainable water bottle to stay on top of your hydration game.
e. Yes, bring all your favorite snacks because ‘nobody’s got time’ to be hangry (hungry & angry) plus, sharing is caring. - Social battery > Battery charger
While you ensure your phone is on full battery mode to capture the moments, don’t forget to also charge your social battery. IMEX America is a marathon not a sprint and there are plenty of ways to engage whether you’re an introvert, ambivert, or extrovert. So, incorporate that morning meditation to ground yourself, follow hashtags and accounts like #IMEX23 or @IMEX_Group to stay in the know, and accept that you can’t be everywhere all at once so choose wisely on how you want to spend your energy! (It’s okay to have an early night in so you’re up for the 7:00am IMEXrun.) - You better (net)work, work, work!
It’s the face-to-face interactions with new connections and heart-felt reunions of industry colleagues for me.
It’s the conscious selection of which experiences to attend, planned by professionals in our field for professionals in our field for me.
It’s the chaotic non-stop, action-packed week full of educational and network opportunities for me.
So simple as #EventProfs Britney Spears would say, “You. Better. (Net)work!” - Genuine connections
Genuine connections don’t just happen as you network, unfortunately. Individuals must truly be aware to authentically connect with others. It’s tough not to get FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) so my biggest advice is quality over quantity so you can be on Team JOMO (Joy of Missing Out). Remember people’s name during that first introductions, mindfully partake by being fully present in that conversation (even if it is a sales pitch), and find common interests as humans, outside of your fancy career titles. The biggest missed opportunity is not following through on the thank you’s and nice to meet you’s afterwards. From my experience, the genuine connections you make in this community will greatly add value to your CWT work life.
So overall, #IMEXcited to cheers to all that’s good about being the #MeetingProfs humans we are, and I’ll report back with the highlights as I take over the CWT Meetings & Events social for the week.

Here’s how to navigate the new cost of travel
In today’s business environment we’re used to figures defying expectation and have built up a resilience to change after the baptism of fire that was the pandemic and its economic fallout. But that doesn’t mean that managing travel and events for an enterprise organization is easy.
Global airfares rose 72.2% and hotel rates 29.8% in 2023, surpassing an originally forecasted 48.5% and 18.5% respectively. Rates are forecasted to climb even further in 2024 while travel budgets are significantly tighter than the halcyon days of 2019, “We’ve seen over the course of the last 12 to 18 months significant impacts from inflation in multiple geographies around the world,” says Nick Vournakis, CWT’s Chief Customer Officer, “local economies will combat inflation by raising interest rates creating pressure on supply growth working in parallel with robust demand for leisure travel creating a natural pressure on pricing. As we look forward pressure is starting to abate to some degree but it’s safe to say that we are normalizing around the true new cost of travel.”
A new baseline
Rather than looking back opportunity lies in planning around a new baseline of higher costs, and – as always – learning from each other. CWT gathered a group of business travel professionals collectively responsible for millions of dollars of travel and events spend around the findings of the CWT GBTA Global Business Travel Forecast 2024 in a webinar Realizing the true cost of travel in 2024.
Building programs amidst higher costs, and tighter budgets parallel to sustainability directives will be no mean feat—especially with operations spanning multiple countries and broad employee demographics.
Bolstered by a desire to build travel and events programs that are more sustainable, and purposeful amidst higher costs many are finding the challenge a meaningful one. Here’s a primer.
Purposeful travel
“With a high level of interest of the impact travel has on earnings and net zero targets, you need to get more with less,” says Vournakis. “how do we define purposeful, meaningful and valuable travel and get a dollar sign connected to that?
One noticeable evolution is changing trip patterns from single to multi-destination trips and spend allocation from internal meetings to more collaboration. In 2019, around 4% of all domestic trips globally were one-day trips shrinking to 3% last year.
“The one thing that we keep talking about internally is purposeful travel to justify the cost of a trip,” says Tracey Horrocks, Director Travel, Fleet & Meetings at GE Healthcare, “Because of the dispersed workforce we’re seeing more 15 – 50 person meetings so teams can get together. We’re also seeing longer trips and fewer trips over longer time periods. In some places, hotel spend is higher than air spend.”
Focusing on trips and events that provide the greatest return on investment attracts talent and enables employees to be at their most productive.
Two’s a charm
Julie Haddix Senior Director, Solutions and Customer Marketing at event and marketing software giant Cvent saw August demand for room nights rise 27% compared to the same month in 2019. Demand is up significantly leading to a change in destination choice, “We see a lot of events going to tier-two and tier-three cities,” says Haddix, “If you look at our top ten, three are in Austin and another three in Nashville. We had zero in New York. We are seeing a change in the cities people are choosing for their meetings and events.”
The CWT GBTA Global Business Travel Forecast shows a 5.6% rise on the cost-per-attendee in 2023 from 2022, expected to rise a further 3.0% to $174 in 2024. Higher costs and high demand mean that secondary cities will continue to grow in popularity as they often offer value for money and a novel experience.
Greener from the get-go
4 in 10 European companies and 1 in 3 US companies say they need to reduce travel per employee by more than 20% to meet their 2030 sustainability targets according to research by multinational professional services firm Deloitte.
Jon Bolger, Deloitte’s Head of Travel looks closely at sustainability credentials when considering cost, “Whether you’re a travel manager or procurement person there are good opportunities to start looking at better ways to leverage spend and link that to working with more sustainable hotels, for example. I would say to everybody to have a look at your top 10 hotels and how they rate for Co2. It gives you an opportunity to start addressing both sides of the equation at the same time, which is going to be of great interest to your business.”
Arthur Loubeau, an associate partner at global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company is also a believer in scrutinising data, using it to increase awareness and education, enable smart hotel and transport choices and encourage blended travel, “we might encourage consultants to stay at a destination over the weekend. It’s better from a lifestyle standpoint and gives them time to explore.”
Learning to build and budget successful travel and events programs starts from a new cost baseline and considers purpose, wellbeing and sustainability, “It’s really about showing the ways that enabling people to do what they do can return a 6-to-1 back into your business. This is not a wooden dollars exercise,” says Bolger.

Empowering climate-conscious travel and meetings through reporting
In a new webinar with Thrust Carbon, we address measuring travel and meetings carbon emissions.
Business travel and meetings are like glue to global organizations, but in today’s environmentally conscious world, it’s crucial to consider their impact on the planet. Two thirds of CWT clients surveyed say that sustainability is more important today than it was three years ago.
In a new webinar with Thrust Carbon, the sustainability reporting firm behind $52 billions of travel spend, Charlie Sullivan, CWT’s VP Product Management, Cameron Kelly, Climate Lead, and Kit Aspen, Founder of Thrust Carbon address rising demand for measuring and reducing carbon emissions from travel and meetings activities.
Here are four learnings from the webinar:
1. Grasp sustainability fundamentals
Traversing the complex landscape of sustainability reporting for travel and meetings can feel like solving an intricate puzzle. From seemingly similar terminology to various levels of environmental legislation and a range of carbon emissions categories, learn the fundamentals of sustainability reporting.
2. Establish a baseline for your sustainability journey
Every organization’s sustainability journey is unique, influenced by factors like industry, size, and corporate culture. We emphasize the importance of establishing a strong baseline for measurement through accurate carbon emissions reporting and data—during what we call the “Calculate” stage. Our strong partnership with Thrust Carbon empowers our customers to embark on or advance their sustainability journey with global access to enhanced emissions data.
3. Navigate challenges in carbon emissions reporting
Numerous environmental legislations already impact how organizations measure and report their carbon footprint, with increasing scrutiny of travel-related emissions. The webinar touches on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which mandates large public and private listed companies in the EU and UK to disclose Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
Aside from their geographical complexities, meeting these requirements can be challenging due to inconsistent carbon methodologies, inaccessible or fragmented data, and expensive processes. Best practices shared include standardizing metrics using a robust methodology, moving beyond emissions for audits and stakeholder transparency, and implementing innovative reporting software with real-time access.
4. Take actional steps today
Recognizing that measuring and setting sustainability goals is overwhelming with various regulations, and obstacles, we identify three actionable steps for travel managers today.
First, secure quality emissions data to accurately assess the environmental impact of your travel and meetings activities. Second, apply a best-in-class methodology to fully understand the environmental KPIs you’re reporting against. Lastly, design a comprehensive expense data strategy that aids in budgeting and understanding carbon footprint associated with different types of travel and meetings expenditure.
“It’s going to take everybody”
In closing the webinar, Charlie Sullivan, CWT’s VP Product Management reminds us that sustainability is a collective responsibility, shared by all organizations and individuals if we are to achieve a greener future, “At the end of the day, where we want to be from a climate perspective is a ‘we’ problem. It’s going to take everybody to get to where we want to be. Collaboration and engagement is going to be most critical for us to achieve our overall goals.”
