2040: Baseline, Boom or Bust
As we enter an era of rapid transformation and unprecedented challenges, it is essential for travel managers, meeting & event planners, and corporate decision-makers to look ahead and frame our current strategic thinking with a clear vision of the future. Business travel and meetings and events (M&E) are poised for significant change over the next decade and a half, driven by a complex interplay of sustainability goals, technological advancements, evolving work models, and geopolitical dynamics.

CWT GBTA Global business travel forecast 2025
When it comes to pricing, global business travel has finally reached an enduring, higher baseline. Prices will continue to rise in 2025, but only moderately, so expect a period of normalized growth.
However, this pricing environment, one of marginal gains and price regularity, is fragile. Global leisure travel has now realized a lot of its pent-up demand, while corporate travel has been resurgent, with 2024 edging at preCovid levels.
There are many factors at play, whether its volatile oil prices, labor costs and constraints, inflationary pressures, and geopolitical factors. As this elevated baseline edges upwards, albeit marginally, travel budgets will come under increased scrutiny, especially as travel patterns and attitudes change.
It’s why business travel can’t be viewed in a silo, and the true value to an organization must be fully realized. This forecast can help with those calculations.

CWT’s Chief Architect Matthew Newton on Gen AI and a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
CWT’s Chief Architect Matthew Newton’s unconventional career has seen him transition from hotel management to business change management and eventually into IT. “My unconventional career is testament to the symbiotic relationship between hospitality, travel, and technology,” he says, “From my very first day at a hotel reception desk to my current 30-year tenure, technology has been a constant companion, shaping roles in finance, operations, and food service.”
Newton joined CWT in 2017 as Chief Architect and member of CWT’s Traveler Experience & Customer business unit, having held national and international leadership roles at glh Hotels and Hilton International. He is now responsible for modernizing core systems and enhancing differentiation for clients in 139 countries. An “API evangelist,” Newton architects enterprise tech environments to deliver customer-centric digital solutions providing guidance and governance across enterprise architecture, digital strategy, technology investment planning and portfolio delivery.

We ask Matthew what led him to his role, what the future of AI means for travel managers, and what we can expect in the future.
What led you to a career in enterprise architecture?
The turn of the millennium marked a pivotal shift as I moved into IT, driven by a major financial system implementation. Surrounded by forward-thinkers, I discovered a more rewarding discourse – one that envisioned the future rather than dwelling on the past. This alignment with technologists sparked a profound realization: technology’s true value lies in its capacity to enhance our lives and work. Embracing this insight led me to enterprise architecture, where I’ve since honed my expertise since receiving a TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework) certification a decade ago.
How is AI changing enterprise tech for customers?
As Chief Architect within our enterprise architecture fraternity, my role extends beyond mere oversight; it’s about vigilance and strategic foresight. In a world brimming with disruptions – be it geopolitical tensions like the war in Ukraine or transformative innovations like cloud computing and AI – it’s imperative to remain ahead of the curve. Being an enterprise architect is about identifying the currents of innovation and steering the business ship toward the most promising horizons, aligning emerging capabilities with qualified business needs.
CWT has been working extensively with AI for more than six years – particularly in our virtual assistant and intelligent display products – and with GenAI and large language models since the start of 2023.
My fascination with AI stems from its potential to redefine our business and began in the whimsical pages of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, where fantastic devices captured my imagination as a teenager. Today, these once-fictional ideas are not only feasible, but they are also actively shaping our world.
The fusion of advanced cloud computing, powerful processors, cost-effective storage, and widespread internet have paved the way for AI’s growth. My team and I have since embraced AI, leveraging it to transform our enterprise architecture. Looking ahead, AI will become a business staple, driving industry innovation, especially in business travel.
How does AI benefit travel managers and travelers, and what future advancements can they anticipate?
I can easily give you a few examples. The first one is related to our advanced messaging chatbot. This innovative tool ensures that interactions are not only quicker but also more personalized, allowing customers to receive immediate, contextualized responses through our chat channel.
Our hybrid messaging channel blends a Virtual Assistant with live counselor support allowing travelers seeking assistance via myCWT web and mobile apps to engage in a unique, unscripted conversation with a GenAI-enabled virtual assistant, which hands over seamlessly to a travel counseler when needed.
The enhanced messaging service has now been rolled out to customers in 56 countries. There’s little waiting with messaging compared to the phone. 85% of CWT messaging interactions are answered in less than 3 minutes.
While the chatbot currently handles simpler tasks, such as providing flight information or processing cancellations, its skill set is expanding. In time, it will be able to manage more complex travel arrangements, maintaining a consistent standard of service, which is key.
Another example is related to intelligent displays we’re integrating to sift through the increasing volume of options, presenting the most relevant choices to our customers. This isn’t about deciding for them; it’s about empowering them to make informed decisions quickly and efficiently. As AI becomes more embedded in our daily lives, the synergy between our technology and the tools our customers use in their professions will deepen, leading to a seamless integration of AI across all facets of business and travel.
What’s the ideal human-technology relationship, and how can both sides benefit?
In today’s information-rich world, AI has emerged as a conversational partner that can offer instant feedback. It should never replace human judgment but act as a brainstorming companion and sounding board for innovation stimulating thought and refining ideas. Just as we’ve adapted to smartphones, AI will become an indispensable resource, not just in answering questions but in shaping the very questions we ask. It’s a dynamic journey, and we’re just at the beginning.
Within the next year, we expect to have GenAI technology deployed for multiple applications – both in proprietary solutions developed in-house, and those from our strategic partners.
In July 2023, we completed a worldwide GenAI hackathon across our operations and technology teams where we brainstormed 110 ideas, prototyped 25 of them in 12 hours, and we identified several for productization. One area of promise is in Sales process optimization – using GenAI to speed up the completion of RFPs, client proposals, and client onboarding by summarizing and systematizing client travel policies.
AI is here to make the human experience better. While its impact is not always immediate, the intent behind AI is to improve our lives. Of course, a strategic approach is key, requiring safe implementation, active use, and ethical, un-biased handling of data.

Fueling change: SAF takes flight in business travel sustainability
With the environmental impact of air travel under the microscope, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is emerging as a key solution in the pursuit of greener skies. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that SAF could contribute around 65% of the emissions reductions needed by aviation to reach net-zero in 2050.
It’s therefore no surprise that the adoption of SAF is gaining momentum, as stakeholders across the board—from airlines to energy companies, technology platforms, and travel management companies—are increasingly investing in research and development to scale up SAF production and distribution. Governments, too, are recognizing the importance of SAF in achieving climate targets. Subsidies, tax incentives, and regulatory frameworks are being put in place to ramp up the production and use of SAF.
However, Varun Mehra, CWT Solutions Group’s regional lead for Asia Pacific, cautions that the scale of SAF production is still small relative to the industry’s overall fuel requirements. “Demand is still far outstripping supply,” he notes. According to IATA, in 2023, SAF production doubled to 600 million liters from the previous year, and projections for 2024 anticipate a further tripling to 1.875 billion liters. Even so, this represents merely 0.53% of the total aviation fuel needs and only 6% of the global renewable fuel production capacity.
Higher airfares on the horizon?
In February this year, Singapore announced it will require all flights departing from its airports to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) starting in 2026, joining a growing list of countries that are implementing similar mandates. The city-state has set a target for SAF to constitute 1% of all jet fuel used at Changi Airport and Seletar Airport in 2026. As SAF currently costs three to five times more than conventional jet fuel, it is estimated that this could increase ticket prices for an economy class passenger on a direct flight from Singapore to Bangkok, Tokyo and London by approximately S$3 (US$2.20), S$6 (US$4.40) and S$16 (US$11.70), respectively. Singapore’s eventual goal is to reach 3-5% SAF use by 2030.
“The introduction of green flight taxes and SAF levies is indeed becoming a global trend, as SAF is seen as one of the most promising pathways to decarbonizing air travel,” according to Mehra.
Countries like Norway, Sweden, and France have already enforced SAF mandates, and the EU as a whole is planning to do so starting next year. In Asia, countries like India, Japan, Malaysia, and Australia are also contemplating similar approaches.
SAF MANDATES AROUND THE WORLD
Country / Region Uptake level European Union In September 2023, the EU Parliament approved an SAF mandate (RefuelEU) requiring fuel suppliers at EU airports to incorporate 2% SAF starting in 2025. That percentage will increase to 6% by 2030, 20% by 2035, and eventually 70% by 2050. France 1% SAF mandate came into effect in 2022. It was increased to 1.5% in 2024, and will be raised to 2% in 2025 to align with the EU-wide SAF mandate. Germany Germany has mandated the use of Power-to-Liquid (PtL) SAF, also known as e-kerosene, starting at 0.5% by 2026, and rising to 1% in 2028 and 2% in 2030. However, these targets might be harmonized with the EU-wide SAF mandate. Norway 0.5% SAF blending mandate was introduced in 2020, which is set to progressively increase to 30% by 2030. Sweden 1% SAF blending mandate has been in place since 2021. Future targets will likely align with the EU-wide SAF mandate. United Kingdom Under the UK’s new mandate, SAF will make up 2% of total UK jet fuel demand in 2025, increasing to 10% in 2030 and then to 22% in 2040. India India has set an indicative SAF blending target of 1% by 2027, increasing to 2% by 2028, and 5% by 2030. The SAF targets will initially apply to international flights. Japan International flights departing from Japanese airports will be required to use at least 10% SAF from 2030, according to a planned mandate. Malaysia In its National Energy Transition Roadmap published in 2023, Malaysia has established an SAF blending mandate starting at 1%, which is expected to increase to 47% by 2050. Singapore Flights departing Singapore will be required to use 1% SAF starting 2026, and 3-5% by 2030. Brazil Brazil is expected to introduce an SAF mandate that will take effect in January 2027, but details are yet to be released. United States The US has adopted incentives, instead of mandates, to encourage fuel suppliers and airlines to support SAF production and use. “When it comes to SAF, it’s a complex landscape characterized by high demand, limited supply, and production challenges,” Mehra observes. “These dynamics, coupled with the potential for SAF mandates, are collectively exerting upward pressure on travel costs.”
Staying ahead of the curve
The growing importance of SAF in achieving net zero targets is prompting companies to recalibrate their travel programs. CWT’s customers are adopting a multi-faceted approach to prepare for these changes, including assessing cost impact, revising travel policies, and exploring alternative travel options. Some are also actively engaging with suppliers to invest in SAF and forge partnerships.
“We’re seeing a huge amount of interest around SAF in the corporate travel arena, and it’s a topic that regularly features in discussions with our clients these days,” says Mehra.
To navigate the changing landscape and capitalize on advancements in SAF that can help make corporate travel programs more sustainable, Mehra recommends the following:
- Stay informed: Keep up to date on the regulatory developments affecting the aviation industry, both within their operational regions and globally. It’s important to be aware of the timelines for the implementation of SAF mandates and understand their potential impact on travel costs and availability. By staying informed, you can anticipate changes and prepare their travel policies and budgets accordingly.
- Understand your travel patterns and review your policies: The anticipation of higher average costs necessitates a meticulous review of travel budgets and financial forecasting, with travel managers playing a pivotal role in this. Analyze the share of travel involving carriers or destinations affected by these mandates within your overall program.
You might also consider reviewing your travel policies. Aligning travel policies with broader Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives is becoming increasingly important. This strategic alignment may entail prioritizing carriers that demonstrate a higher commitment to SAF usage, switching to other modes of travel such as rail, as well as initiatives to extend and combine business trips to reduce the overall travel footprint. - Engage with supplier partners: A number of customers have stepped up engagement with their suppliers and are not just passive observers to the changes taking place. They are actively initiating discussions with airline partners to incorporate SAF-related commitments into commercial negotiations. This proactive stance includes a willingness to adjust traditional discount structures in favor of supporting SAF investments.
- Bring internal stakeholders on board: The process of adjusting travel policies to incorporate sustainability considerations should be inclusive, involving key internal stakeholders. This includes senior leadership, travel managers, procurement teams, and sustainability officers. Collaborating across these functions ensures comprehensive buy-in and aligns the travel policy adjustments with your company’s broader sustainability goals and business objectives.
- Consider long-term sustainability: This involves a thorough review and revision of the travel policy to reflect a strong commitment to sustainability. It should go beyond mere compliance with impending regulations to embrace a rounded approach towards reducing the environmental impact of business travel.
Policies could include encouraging or mandating the use of sustainable suppliers, integrating sustainability criteria into supplier selection processes, and setting clear sustainability targets.
You could also purchase SAF using “book-and-claim” solutions to mitigate your emissions. For example, CWT recently formed a global partnership with SQUAKE, giving our customers access to Neste’s world class SAF as well as other impactful climate projects.
Additionally, enabling travelers to make the right choices by providing guidelines and incentives for selecting more sustainable travel options is essential. Developing a strategy that encompasses these elements will not only address immediate regulatory compliance but also position your company as a leader in corporate travel sustainability.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel holds the promise of making business travel greener without compromising on efficiency or convenience. Scaling up production to meet the growing demand, ensuring cost competitiveness with conventional jet fuel, and addressing regulatory barriers are among the hurdles that industry stakeholders must overcome. However, with continued innovation and collaboration, these challenges can be turned into opportunities for progress. With industry stakeholders, governments, and consumers rallying behind this green revolution, the future of business travel looks promisingly sustainable.

- Stay informed: Keep up to date on the regulatory developments affecting the aviation industry, both within their operational regions and globally. It’s important to be aware of the timelines for the implementation of SAF mandates and understand their potential impact on travel costs and availability. CWT expands access to Finnair NDC content in Finland and the Nordics
CWT has made rapid progress in deploying NDC capabilities in Finland since May last year, ensuring its customers continue to have uninterrupted access to Finnair content through their preferred booking channels.
When Finnair removed its last remaining domestic itineraries from EDIFACT distribution in February this year, more than 90% of CWT’s customers in Finland were already booking this content via NDC-enabled connections using the Amadeus Cytric online booking tool (OBT), as well as through travel counselor-assisted channels such as phone, email, and messaging. CWT will further expand its NDC coverage in the Nordics to include additional routes, airlines, and points-of-sale over the next three months.
“What we’ve achieved in Finland exemplifies how NDC can be deployed quickly, at scale, and without disruption to customers,” said Erik Magnuson, CWT’s Vice President of Product Management, Travel Content & Connectivity. “This was the result of meticulous planning and swift technology development by our teams, as well as our close collaboration with Amadeus and Finnair. We are now using this as a blueprint to expand our NDC capabilities with other airlines around the world.”
“Our successful deployment of NDC with CWT in Finland marks a significant milestone on our path of distribution transformation,” Jenni Suomela, Vice President Global Sales and Channel Management, Finnair, said. “The strong collaboration with our partners at CWT and Amadeus made it possible to complete this roll-out swiftly, ensuring seamless access to our services. We’re excited to make further progress on this distribution transformation to enable us to provide more personalized and dynamic content and to meet our joint customers’ needs and expectations. The recently launched new product PrioFlex, only available through modern channels, is a great example of this.”
“We are very happy to see the positive results of our close collaboration with CWT and Finnair,” said Ludo Verheggen, NDC[X] Program Director, Amadeus. “Together, we have ensured that CWT’s customers can have easy access to all of Finnair’s content, either through our Cytric Easy self-booking tool or through CWT’s travel counselors using Amadeus’ NDC-enabled Selling Platform Connect solution. We are working hard together with our partners, customers, and the industry to unlock the full potential that NDC can deliver to all stakeholders, from airlines to travel sellers and all the way to the corporate traveler, thus enabling NDC adoption at scale.”
CWT made big strides in expanding its NDC content coverage in 2023. The Finnair implementation is the latest milestone on CWT’s roadmap to provide clients with NDC content, which now includes the Cytric, Concur, Serko, and GetThere OBTs, with content being sourced via Amadeus, Sabre and Travelfusion. It intends to build on that momentum through 2024, with NDC deployments for more airlines and markets in the pipeline.

CWT expands central payment solution in China to cover hotel bookings
- CWT’s customers in China can now book, pay, and reconcile travel expenses for flights, hotels, and rail tickets from a central account.
- Central payments can help increase traveler satisfaction, improve travel policy compliance, and save time and effort on expense reconciliation.
CWT has introduced a new end-to-end central payment solution for hotel bookings in China. Developed in partnership with corporate payments specialist AirPlus, the solution is integrated into the myCWT platform. It works for both self-service bookings made using the myCWT web and mobile apps, and for travel counselor-assisted bookings. It also covers all types of hotel content including CWT business rates and client negotiated rates, in addition to non-GDS content sourced via aggregators and CWT’s direct API connections with hotels.
When a traveler books a hotel, their company’s payment information is captured at the time of booking to cover the room rate and deposit. The traveler doesn’t need to provide a credit card at check-in, make any payment at check-out, or keep track of invoices from their stay to get reimbursed by their company. The company receives a consolidated monthly statement for all their travelers’ bookings, with a single, itemized invoice that facilitates easy VAT reclaim and expense management.
“This new solution will address several major pain-points for our customers,” said Albert Zhong, General Manager, China, CWT. “The adoption of corporate credit cards and virtual cards in China is relatively low compared to many other markets around the world. Business travelers here usually first pay for travel expenses out of their own pocket, and then submit tax invoices for all these expenses to get reimbursed. A central payments solution not only creates a much better experience for travelers, it can also help companies gain greater control over their spend, increase policy compliance, improve hotel attachment rates, reduce the risk of fraudulent transactions, and streamline invoice reconciliation.”
CWT already offers central payments for air and rail bookings in China, and these have been widely adopted by its customers. An energy company and another company from the life sciences sector have become the first customers that have signed up to use central payments for their hotel bookings. In the three months since making the switch, they have already seen their hotel attachment rates improve by 50-60 percentage points, while usage of their corporate negotiated hotel rates has climbed by around 20 percentage points.

Nagasaki and Fukuoka – Japan’s second cities offering hidden MICE treasures
When most people think of Japan, they probably envision the bright lights and bustling streets of Tokyo or the vibrant city of Osaka. These cities certainly have a lot to offer, from delicious food to rich cultural experiences, but they are just two of many cities in Japan that are worth exploring.
In fact, some of the most interesting and unique experiences in Japan can be found outside of Tokyo and Osaka, like the off-beaten track, Nagasaki and Fukuoka. These cities have their own distinct personalities and cultures, and they offer a great alternative to the more well-known tourist destinations.

Nagasaki, the old gate to Japan
Nagasaki, located on the western coast of Japan’s Kyushu Island, is a fascinating destination with a rich history and culture. One of its most notable attractions is Dejima, an artificial island that was once the only point of contact between Japan and the outside world during the Edo period. Visitors can explore the restored Dejima Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture, which showcases the island’s role as a trading hub and offers insights into the lives of the Dutch traders who lived there. This place has been converted and we are able to organize events there, bringing history and culture into part of the event making it more memorable.
Aside from Dejima, Nagasaki has much to offer, including beautiful gardens, traditional architecture, and delicious food. The city is also a great destination for meetings and events, thanks in part to the Dejima Convention Center. This modern facility is in the heart of the city and offers a range of meeting spaces and amenities for groups of various sizes. The center’s location also makes it easy to explore Nagasaki’s many attractions, from the nearby Glover Garden to the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum.
Visitors can explore the city’s charming streets, important sites with historical background and lovely gardens, or take a cable car up to the top of Mount Inasa for stunning views of the city and its harbor. Nagasaki is also known for its food, particularly its unique style of champon noodle soup. This is a Chinese-influenced noodle dish filled with seafood, pork and vegetables in a rich broth made from pork and chicken.

Stunning views from Mt Inasa Food and Nature in Fukuoka
Fukuoka, another city worth exploring, is one of Japan’s largest and most vibrant cities. Visitors can explore the city’s many museums and galleries, including the Fukuoka Art Museum and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, which showcase a wide range of works from across Asia. The city is also known for its tasty local cuisine, like tonkotsu ramen and mentaiko (spicy cod roe). And for those who love nature, Fukuoka offers idyllic parks and gardens, as well as nearby attractions like the Yanagawa River, which can be explored by boat. For team building or to experience the Japanese culture, try painting the Hakata Doll, local traditional art and craft in Fukuoka.

Choosing a city like Nagasaki or Fukuoka for your next meeting or event can be a great way to experience a more authentic side of Japan. These cities offer a more relaxed pace of life than Tokyo or Osaka and may also offer more affordable prices. And with their unique histories and cultures, they offer plenty of opportunities for exploration and discovery.
So why not add Nagasaki or Fukuoka to your Japan itinerary and see what these fascinating cities have to offer? They’re filled with rich culture, history, and delicious food, and they offer a great alternative for travelers who are looking for something a little bit different.
Special thanks to Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) for the familiarisation trip to let me get to know more about these two cities offering for meetings & events.
It is time to host your next meeting or event in Japan.
